Col. Wood Kyle, in his memo reviewing the Report, objected to statements which appeared in "Annex N (Intelligence)" of the Final Report charging that the November drive "never achieved the objective of pushing the Japs back beyond the Poha River. So firmly entrenched were the enemy that the Marines were held for 12 days, suffering notable losses." Col Kyle's memo states, "The above statement is not correct," and refers the reader to Col. Arthur's report, which states his directions from Gen. Vandegrift on November 3 were "to establish a small beachhead in the area about a thousand yards west of Point Cruz and to contain the enemy until reinforcements could be furnished."
