Growing
Protect newly planted seeds with a tent of bird netting. Remove the netting once the seedlings reach 4 inches tall and then thin out—and eat—every other seedling. Allowing the soil to dry out, especially as favas’ sweet-smelling blossoms appear, results in poor pod set (the number of pods that develop on the plant) and poor bean yields, as do temperatures over 80 degrees. Mulch with 2 inches of straw and water whenever the soil dries down to the bottom of your second knuckle. Foliar-feed with liquid organic fertilizer when the plants grow to about 1 foot and again when they flower.
Tall and rigid, fava bean plants often lean over as the pods mature. Building a “corral” around the plants provides extra support and keeps them upright. Simply drive a 6-foot-tall bamboo pole into each corner of the fava bean plot and string twine horizontally between the poles at 12-inch intervals. After harvest, pull and compost the plants or use them as a cover crop. Cut the stalks down, chop them up with a sharp spade, and dig them into the garden’s soil. Allow at least two weeks before replanting the bed.
