I parked behind Lyssandra’s Thunderbird and got out. Shawn held the door for me as we walked into Mila’s house. Everything looked the same as the last time we’d all gathered for a big bang of a meeting. The events that took place afterward, though, had changed us all.

“Hey, hey, slackers!” Alex called when she slung open the door and pranced in a few minutes after we did.

Miguel strolled in behind her, inhaling the aromas already wafting out from the kitchen, closing the door behind them. “What are we eating today?”

The conversation grew to a steady hum of voices. No one tried to talk over anyone else, so it was a bearable and oddly comfortable sound. My heart grew heavy with a single thought. Whisper would love to be in the thick of things here. Animated gestures, laughing, people joking with each other; all the things my own household didn’t have as I was growing up, but had tried to give a semblance of after our parents died. Marshall would have fallen right in with Miguel, Cason, and Jake.

My eyes teared up and a hard knot formed in my throat. I’d not allowed myself to grieve for my baby brother in the right time. There was too much to do. When everything was over, I promised myself that I would finally take the time I needed to cope with losing all of them. Jake included.

I found a stool and pulled it to a vacant spot by the wall. People watching had become a thing I enjoyed. Especially around this crew of oddballs, even with the conversation somber and melancholy in comparison to the boisterous and obnoxious ones that normally took place.

Lyssandra stood against the counter with concentration etched across her face. She’d been practicing her magic with Bobby, learning how to best manipulate her appearance. Using Miguel and Alex’s energies gave her the ability to partially shift into a large cat, but I had no idea what she’d just tried to accomplish. She flexed her fingers and hands a few times, then her skin turned a light shade of green with her hair morphed to limp vine-looking things.

“Who you tryin’na be? Medusa or the Hulk?” Alex crowed.

“Doesn’t matter,” Miguel belted between cackles. “She’s done a piss poor job for both.”

“Shut it, you two!” Lyssandra wailed as she grabbed a small frying pan Mila had slipped onto the counter.

A loud thwack resounded around the room as Miguel howled in both pain and laughter. Alex popped up from her chair and tried to take the pan from Lyssandra, but she wasn’t fast enough. Lyssandra took off out the back door, quickly darting between the bodies shuffling around to get out of their way.

“What did I tell you about using my munitions?” Alex screeched as she half tripped out the back door.

“Oh, fuckin’ A,” Miguel snorted. “Bobby, you might want to step in and save your girl before Alex gets ahold of her. There won’t be anything left if you don’t.”

Bobby stuck his hands up in the air.
