Chapter Thirteen

Reid had one forearm thrown over his eyes where he lay on his back on the couch, trying desperately to ignore the two people in the bed above him. The sun was up, its rays stretching across the cabin through the window on one side of the little structure. He had spent half the night restlessly flopping around before finally getting a few hours’ sleep.

Adriana had been the first to doze off in the loft. He’d felt her sliding until he knew she was unconscious. Nolan had lain awake for a long time after that, but Reid didn’t communicate with him. He’d allowed the man his silence the same way he appreciated Nolan doing the same for him.

After a few minutes, Reid felt Nolan moving around and sat up as his friend climbed down the ladder. He knew Nolan’s objective was to let Adriana sleep. And Reid knew better than Nolan how badly she needed it. He stood and pointed at the door.

Nolan nodded, and they slipped outside without making a sound. Neither of them wore shoes, but they weren’t going for a hike. They needed to talk.

Nolan sighed while he ran a hand through his hair. “You didn’t make a play for her this week.”

“No. I mean I tried not to, but I can’t take all the credit. She enforced the distance between us better than I ever could have on my own.”

“I’m torn. On the one hand, of course that makes me happy, but on the other hand, I don’t want to come between you two if it’s what’s meant to be.”

Reid glanced behind them at the cabin. “You just spent the night with her. Did you not feel the connection?” He knew he sounded sarcastic. It was intentional. Nolan was not going to martyr himself over Adriana.

Nolan sighed. “Of course. Strong as ever. And I hate that it seems she’s so totally torn between us. What is the world telling us?”

“I have no idea. Your parents were telling me that wolf shifters sometimes meet more than one mate. They said Wyatt had been to Montana and knew a bit about their lifestyle. I haven’t had a chance to get ahold of him. I should.”

“I’m not sure what difference it makes. It changes nothing. No matter what weird customs the wolves have, Adriana still has to choose between us, and I have to believe it will happen when the time is right.”

Reid inhaled slowly. “I wish that were sooner rather than later. This is tough. Maybe we’re meant to get to know her better first. Maybe she plays a role in this crazy thing happening with you.”

Nolan leaned against the side of the cabin. “I hope not because I could be in this for a long time. I’m starting to worry about my job. Hell, I’m worried about your job too.”

“Lord, don’t worry about me. I have employees. They’re handling things. I was due for a vacation anyway. And you know keeping Adriana safe is not altruistic. I care about her.
