Chapter Thirteen

“A date. A gods-be-slapped date!”

Gage, on guard outside the changing room while Daire used it, was forced to listen to him complaining bitterly as he had every second since they’d left Knuckles.

“He couldn’t have asked for a tooth or a finger? Something I would have given him more easily?” Daire raged next, above the swishes and whisks of the clothes he was trying on. “Or us to take him to the dentist!”

“You heard him.” Gage ducked and just managed to catch the rejected clothes Daire expelled from the changing room by flinging them over the top of the curtain. The short curtain, whose gaps below and above were the reasons Gage was on guard there. No one should peep at Daire. “Heard what he said, that he hasn’t had a date for three decades.”

“I refer you to the dentist remark,” Daire snapped.

Gage flinched at the wail from behind the door. “Those parachute pants no good?” he asked.

“They make my ass look fat!” Daire shrieked.

This small store, Vyntyge Pyxye, on the edge of town not far from the hinterland, had a very odd selection of clothes, but Daire had been reluctant to go farther into the capital, and they were time-crunched. Gage thought about what Knuckles had said, and about how and why leprechauns lived in the hinterland.

“I didn’t realize chauns can’t go into certain places, that they need to be accompanied by a pixie,” he said.

“I’d never thought about it. And we think pixies have it rough,” Daire replied.

Gage mused a little on segregation…and interspecies relationships. Griffins were thought to be elitist, keeping to their own kind, and he’d never seen a cross-species match, but he was here because of a relationship between two people from different species.

Catching a glimpse of Daire’s mostly naked body when the curtain wafted up had him hardening in his pants. Griffins had flings outside their own race, and a fling was all this was, wasn’t it? And it shouldn’t even be that. He was here to work, not play, and yet, the more he thought about it, Daire going—no matter how reluctantly—on a date with another guy sat like a stone on his chest.

Well, he’d be there. With the number of enemies after him, Daire needed a bodyguard, even if Gage had made a lousy one so far. Having lost their subject to kidnappers was a pretty good sign he was shit at his job. Maybe he’d be a better chaperone, and he certainly intended to try, because he had no intention of Knuckles even holding Daire’s hand, never mind stealing a kiss from him. He rubbed his stomach where it ached again. The curtain rattled back on its rail, Daire stomped out…and Gage’s jaw dropped.

“Are those…leather pants?” he managed to ask. Tight black leather pants. And knee-high black leather boots. And a long black leather coat. “And that shirt…” That frilly white shirt that didn’t have buttons but that was laced at the front. But not with lace. So why did they
