I described in detail how Amy had looked. Right up to her eyes staring up at the trees. When I told her about her dad wailing, we both laughed. Then I told her about him finding Amyâs phone and that I hadnât even seen it. I would have loved to had her phone. It was a newer model than mine. Deb got a strange look on her face. âWhy in the hell did you let him have the damn phone?!â she practically screamed at me. This confused me. Why was she so upset about Amyâs phone? I was the one that had wanted it. âYou're screwed,â Deb said with a laugh. I still didnât get what she meant. âWhat are you talking about?â I asked. Then to my horror. Deb explained to me that the police could easily get Amyâs phone from her parents and find out who she had called to pick her up.â It took a moment for it to register with me that there wouldnât be a call on the phone from Amy. The police would know I had lied to them. âItâs just a matter of time now,â Deb said. I felt like I was going to throw up. I didnât want to go to jail for Amyâs murder! I hadnât killed her! âBut it was all your idea!â I reminded Deb. âI know,â she said while reaching into her pocket. âThat is why I have it all figured out.â She said with a smile. I felt a little relief that she had worked something out to help us. She opened her hand and showed me a small pill bottle. âWhatâs that?â I asked her. âStrong sleeping pills,â she said with a smile. I still wasnât getting it. âWhat are you going to do with them?â I asked. Deb looked down at the pill bottle then back up at me. âIf things get too bad for us, we split this bottle and leave here together.â She said. My heart skipped a beat. This all made sense to me now. Earlier Arklou had been talking to me through the Ouija board. All of his answers were about death, dying and killed. I assumed it was because Amy was dead.
I hadnât considered killing myself. I was excited now that Deb had found us a way out. I smiled back at her and held out my hand for half of the pills. I was thrilled to know that I wouldnât be going to jail now. Deb and I used the board until almost sun up. I knew mom wouldnât be mad at me for her being there. She would be glad that I had someone to keep me company now.
It was late morning when Mom came into my room to wake me up. She said the police had called and they wanted me to come down to the station for more questioning. Deb asked if she could go, but mom told her no, and that I could call her when I got home.
