Nellie put her head down, too, but didnât eat. She squinted and sniffed at a pile of potatoes and corn piled on her plate. Sheâd already lined up all the shrimp and sausage along one side of her plate.
âMy apologies,â Ms. Finch said. âIf Iâd known yâall were vegetarians, I wouldâve made extra corn and taters.â
Dr. Tibbits smiled and took another nibble of potatoes. âThese are just wonderful,â she said. âArenât they, Nellie?â
Nellie took a bite of potato and swallowed hard. âMm-hmm,â she said. âWonderful.â
Dr. Tibbits changed the subject. âSo, Austin. Your dad tells me youâve been having vulture troubles.â
âYour daddy got you boys out there messing with dangerous animals again?â Ms. Finch snapped.
âNo maâam,â said Austin.
âTurkey vultures arenât really dangerous,â Dr. Tibbits said. âTheyâre just scavengers.â
Ms. Finch turned to Dr. Tibbits. She was smiling, but Austin and Ethan saw that their mamaâs eyes were dark, the way they were when she was mad and trying not to show it.
âNo offense, Dr. Tibbits,â their mom said. âBut I know my boys and I know my ex-husband. Theyâd lose an eye if it meant saving a buzzard from stubbing its beak.â
The table went silent. After a long and drawn out moment, the quiet sounds of chewing and clinking forks slowly resumed.
Ms. Finch speared a slice of sausage on the end of her knife. She eyed it like a starving hawk might eye a wounded rabbit.
It was Nellie who broke the silence. âItâs not these two Iâd necessarily be worried about, Ms. Finch,â she said. âFrom what Daryl says, itâs those two Manley boys.â
âWhoâs that?â Dr. Tibbits asked.
âJust a couple of neighborhood knuckleheads,â Ms. Finch said. She turned her glare to Austin and Ethan and said, âI thought we were done with all of this foolishness.â
âYâall ever wrestle up there in Wisconsin?â Ms. Finch asked. She was pointing her steak knife at Nellie. âAnd Iâm not talking about fake rasslinâ neither. The real thing.â
âNo, maâam,â Nellie said. âNothing organized.â
âWhy donât you come down to the gym after school on Monday,â Miss Finch said. âAustin and Ethan, too. Iâll teach all yâall a thing or two about dealing with knuckleheads.â Then she added, âWithout getting in trouble.â
Dr. Tibbits frowned, but Nellie saluted and said, âSign me up, Coach.â
Nellie smirked as Austin sat there slack-jawed with a mouth half full of shrimp and potatoes.
âCareful, Ace,â she said. âDonât choke before we even get to wrestle.â
