Chapter Thirteen

The Anax

“It’s about time, you two.” My dad met us at the gates.

“Hi, General Adisa. I apologize. We got back as soon as we could.”

“I trust my daughter was in good hands with you.” He used his general’s voice. Jibri kept sucking air but no words came out. Dad slapped him on the shoulder.

“Ah, boy, just messing with you. Your dad and I need you to come help set up for the festival.”

“Hi, Dad, it’s me, Ayla. Remember your daughter?” I smirked and gave my dad a hug before he whisked Jibri away.

I didn’t spend much time helping to set up for the festival with a few neighbors. I said bye to Dad and Jibri and went home. I was tired from my long bizarre day and was ready to lay in my lamb’s ear bed. I took a shower and changed into my pajamas. The soft fuzzy leaves felt like clouds as I drifted to sleep.

“Wake up, sleepyhead. Did you forget your lesson with me tonight?”

Uncle Jezle turned on the lights in my room.

“Uncle Jezle, can we please do this another time? I’m very tired—”

“No excuses. It’s not my fault that you were flying around all day long.”

“Uh, seriously, Uncle, can we not do this right now? You know I’m not just flying around all day; it’s my military recon assignment. Just get out and give me a moment.”

“Okay, but don’t take too long. I will be over by the south ledge.”

I dragged my body out of bed and twisted my braids into a bun. I grabbed my sickles and joined my uncle.

“What do you think you are doing? No man-made weapons. You know the rules. Your mother, Abena, made me promise that I would continue to train you in our family’s way of magic.”

“But my dad told me to never leave without them.”

“You know I respect Gabriel, but my sister, Abena, was the most powerful sorceress in the kingdom. These are her rules.”

I sighed and turned to take my weapons back to my cabinet and bumped into my dad. Oh, shit, here we go.

He hates my uncle and hates magic even more. He blames magic for my mom’s death.

“Damn it, Jezle, you over here meddling again?”

“Don’t start with me, general of the kiss-ass army.”

My dad leaned back into his fighting stance, and my uncle’s hands started to glow with purple fire.

I flew in between them. “What would Mom say about you two fighting? I can’t take this shit right now!”

In unison, they said, “Watch your damn mouth.” They looked at each other and laughed.

Ugh, glad I could help bring their old asses together.

“Gabriel, I won’t keep her too late.”

“Go, I know deep down Abena wanted Ayla to claim her magic gifts and have the best of both worlds.”
