Chapter 17

Mary told Bill and Luke to go sit outside, she wanted to give Paula her morning sponge bath and make sure she was presentable. While she was finishing up and carefully brushing out Paula’s hair, she heard a commotion outside the room. When she went to check, she was surprised to see Luke’s entire team standing in the hall.

“How’s she doing?” Galen asked while he gave Luke a huge man hug.

“Better. We got great news this morning. The swelling on her brain is starting to go down and she moved her hand this morning. It’s going to take a while for her to completely recover, but the doctor said she’ll make it okay.”

“That’s great. What the hell happened?” Galen asked.

“It’s a long story.” Seven very large men were blocking the hallway. “Why don’t we step outside, it will be easier to talk and I need some fresh air, the hospital smells are dulling my senses. There is a patio off the visitors waiting room, let’s go out there.” Bill quickly let Mary know where they were going and they all went outside. On their way outside, Bill stopped to buy some of bottles of water from a vending machine when a cleaning lady stopped him.

“How many do you need?” she asked.

“Ah, seven, no eight,” he thought of Mary.

“Stay here, I’ll be right back.” She went into a side room and came back with eight cold bottles of water.

“Let me pay you for those.” Bill told her.

“No sir, that isn’t necessary. After being able to listen last night to that man out there with the whitish hair, I’m happy to pay for them myself.”

“What do you mean by listening to him?”

“Sing, sir. It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. The nurses say it was his singing that helped her come back.”

“Come back?” Bill asked.

“From the dead, sir. They thought for sure the doctor was going to pronounce her brain dead this morning.”

“Did the man out there know?” He indicated Luke.

“I think the doctor told him last night before he left. That’s why it was so sad when he sang to her, I think he was saying good-bye.”

Galen had been standing at the door waiting for Bill and overheard their whole conversation. Galen walked over to Bill and took four of the bottles. Bill was at a total loss for words.

“I’m sorry, you’re saying he knew they were going to pull the plug this morning.” Galen asked quietly.

“Yes sir. I’m sorry, I need to go. I have to finish my duties.” She hurried off to finish her work.

“He wasn’t going to say a damn thing. He was going to go through that alone. It would have killed him. Do you think he’ll ever realize we’re here for him?” Bill remarked.

“He knows. He just doesn’t know how to ask.” Galen had known Luke for a long time. “If he hadn’t been through hell already, I think I’d kick his ass.”

“I’ll be glad to help if you change your mind. I didn’t know he could sing.
