Chapter 8-Finn

“Whaddya think?” I ask, bumping my shoulder slightly into Blakely’s. “Think you can try the dance out now?”

The clog dance finished a few moments ago, and my cousin did an amazing job with the traditional choreography. It was fun watching the people dance around in their wooden shoes, or klompen as we call them in Dutch. The natural, forceful stomp against the floor created a force that put a smile on my face and brought chills to my arms.

Those goosebumps are still lowering as I take another glance at Blakely.

With the dance floor now open to fair-goers, she’s keenly eyeing scattered couples doing light polka steps on the spacious dance area, her head bobbing to the music. I think she’s memorizing the steps.

“You like the dance?” I ask, leaning slightly into her.

“Love it.” She never stops watching the crowd. “I wish I could try out those shoes.” She points to one of the girls who was in the dance. “They look like so much fun.”

“Ha.” I laugh, gazing down at her slender legs and feet. “Klompen weren’t made for angel feet, Blakely.”

“Might surprise you, but I’m no angel,” she teases.

“Wasn’t talking about you,” I tease back. “I was talking about your feet.”

“Well, my feet aren’t angelic either.” She’s side-eyeing me, with a soft curl on her lips and a high rise of color in her cheeks. “Dancing on pointe isn’t the most comfortable. I bet I could wear those… those … whatever you called them shoes and dance perfectly fine.”

“Klompen,” I repeat.

“Yeah, those things. No problem.”

“I’m sure you could dance in them fine.” I cock my head to the side, grinning at her fire. “Or you could dance with me.” I point to a couple doing a one-two-three shuffle to the backdrop of the tuba. “That step right there. Think you can do that with me?”

“Me?” She jerks her head to me, eyebrows lifted high. “You are talking to a ballet soloist. Did the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy last year in the Nutcracker. I know I can do it. Let me look at their steps once more.”

“Well, that wasn’t listed on the dating app,” I exclaim over the music. “Or at least Tante Eta didn’t tell me I was dating a local star.”

“Marie and I take turns staring in the role.” A giggle slips out of her. “She does a better pirouette or spin, but my footwork and jumps are still the envy of the town.”

“Interesting,” I mull since I’m stopping the urge to tease her about how flexible she may or may not be.

I don’t think she’d mind. Judging from the starry-eyed look and tears she gave me earlier, I’d say our night is going better than expected. Here’s hoping it’s more than one.

I clear my throat, deciding to stay on topic. “Hopefully, you don’t mind me, then. I can’t dance for shit. Your toes are about to get stepped on.”

“Trust me, I think my toes are numb by now from all the pointe I’ve done,” she says through a giggle.
