Chapter Seven

I needed a moment to collect myself.

I shouldn’t, but I did.

What the hell was going on here? Was I in the apocalypse officially? Had the Titans completely ruined Olympus and I was induced in some kind of smoke-filled haze and this was a nightmare that I was currently living in? Why did I have suitors all of a sudden? What did they want ffrom me? I wasn’t a bride. They all knew that. So...what was going on?

At that moment, my cell phone rang. The shrill sound caused the birds in the nearby bushes to dash into the sky, feathers fluttering down to the ground. I nearly jumped out of my own skin, completely forgetting I had it, and that it was on ring.

“Hello?”

“You got the list?”

I wanted to roll my eyes. After everything Apollo and I have been through, he still had no time for informal greetings. I shouldn’t be surprised.

“Yes.”

A beat. “What happened?”

How could he possibly know that simply from the sound of my voice? “What are you talking about?”

“Something happened,” he said. “You sound more snippy than usual.”

I scoffed, rubbing my free palm on my forehead. “Look, where are you?” I asked. “I’d like to leave.”

“I’ll be there in two shakes.”

Before I could even ask him what that meant, he hung up on me.

I glared at the phone. It wasn’t as though I was expecting romance from Apollo. I knew him well enough to know that he probably didn’t even know what that word meant. But at the very least, he could treat me like his equal and show me a decorum of respect.

“How much did you hear?”

My mother’s voice caused me to jump again. My poor heart squeezed with even more pain than it had the first time. I slapped a hand over my chest only to turn around and look at my mother directly. She had a frown on her face, her lips twisted in a resigned manner. She knew I had been here the whole time, and while she clearly didn’t appreciate it, she hadn’t said anything either.

“Enough.” The word was bit out. I couldn’t even look at her. Instead, I reached for a rose, only to have it prick my finger. I sneered.

“You should know better.”

I couldn’t tell if my mother was referring to the rose or my eavesdropping. I wasn’t in the mood to clarify, either.

“Well then.”

Now, I was forced to look at her agan, my mouth dropped open in shock. “What?” I asked. “That’s all you have to say?”

“What would you like me to say?” she returned, glancing at her nails with a frown. “You have two prospects which is two more than I ever could have expected from you. Three if we want to count Apollo, but I wouldn’t.” She clicked her tongue against the back of her teeth. “On top of this, I still can’t make heads or tails if the Golden Prince still wants to be with your sister or if he is merely duty-bound to find her and restore her to our family.
