Just Nice
We drove back around the block, parked up, and sat there watching swallows nesting in the eaves of our building, because it suddenly had eaves. And swallows. Iâm pretty sure the pigeons and sparrows would have bullied them out of town just yesterday.
âHairballs,â I said again.
âYep,â Callum said. âBut it solves a lot, you know? I mean, itâs Mrs Smith. Weâll just explain the situation to her, and sheâll give the book back.â
I looked at him. âIf it was that easy, she wouldnât have taken the book in the first place. I mean, when has she ever let herself into our apartment before? Or taken anything that doesnât belong to her?â
Callum scratched a hand through his hair, making it stand up in weird directions. âWell, okay, but Iâm sure once we talk to herââ
âBook of power, Callum. And itâs been splashing that power everywhere. Mrs Smith may not be feeling quite herself.â
He sighed, drumming his fingers on the wheel, then said, âWell, itâs still the best way to start, right?â
I personally thought the best way to start involved a covert night raid and no confrontation, but this was Mrs Smith. As far as humans go, she was pretty good. She brought us sardines and pasta bakes when things were tight, and had even been known to lie to the odd large and irate visitor about where we lived. So, okay. I got where he was coming from. We owed it to her. âAlright,â I said. âBut if the bookâs really got its teeth into her, this isnât going to go easy.â
He nodded, and opened the door. âLetâs just try.â
