Just Nice

We drove back around the block, parked up, and sat there watching swallows nesting in the eaves of our building, because it suddenly had eaves. And swallows. I’m pretty sure the pigeons and sparrows would have bullied them out of town just yesterday.

“Hairballs,” I said again.

“Yep,” Callum said. “But it solves a lot, you know? I mean, it’s Mrs Smith. We’ll just explain the situation to her, and she’ll give the book back.”

I looked at him. “If it was that easy, she wouldn’t have taken the book in the first place. I mean, when has she ever let herself into our apartment before? Or taken anything that doesn’t belong to her?”

Callum scratched a hand through his hair, making it stand up in weird directions. “Well, okay, but I’m sure once we talk to her—”

“Book of power, Callum. And it’s been splashing that power everywhere. Mrs Smith may not be feeling quite herself.”

He sighed, drumming his fingers on the wheel, then said, “Well, it’s still the best way to start, right?”

I personally thought the best way to start involved a covert night raid and no confrontation, but this was Mrs Smith. As far as humans go, she was pretty good. She brought us sardines and pasta bakes when things were tight, and had even been known to lie to the odd large and irate visitor about where we lived. So, okay. I got where he was coming from. We owed it to her. “Alright,” I said. “But if the book’s really got its teeth into her, this isn’t going to go easy.”

He nodded, and opened the door. “Let’s just try.”
