CHAPTER 12

We both sit there, surrounded in a silence that should be awkward, but it affords me time to soak it in. This is it. The end—the end of everything I ever thought was true about my past-life dreams, my other life with Robert. For so long, my dreams held comfort, escape, were a safe haven to fall into when everything else in my life was way too hard most of the time. Deep down, I’ve always known that’s why I never tried to research anything about Robert, even when I was sure that what was happening to me had everything to do with real memories and nothing at all to do with elaborate fantasies or random streams of consciousness, like most therapists would have one believe. But I’m ready for the truth now. I need it more than anything. I’m just glad he’s willing to give it to me.

Robert clears his throat and I hold my breath.

“Some of this is going to be tough to hear,” he says.

“I understand.” I clutch the silver rattle tighter.

He smiles, but it doesn’t hide the tears threatening his eyes. “Wanna know something funny? Most men believe they are the masters of their fates, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Fate is the master, and we are the souls it controls. Sometimes we seek out the ghosts and do everything in our power to drive them away. But sometimes the ghosts seek us. “In every lifetime, before we meet, you belong to another.” He drags his hands through his hair so tightly it causes him to squint. “You belong to another, but you fall for me, and it’s as natural as breathing, like no one else in the world exists but us.” He takes my hands as if he has to hold them to keep me from slipping away. “But if you don’t take anything else from the things I’m about to tell you, promise me you’ll believe that you’ve always been mine. No other man has ever truly claimed your heart. That gift has always been mine and mine alone.”

The words show in his eyes, which are rounder and darker, with yellow flecks running through them that I hadn’t noticed until this moment.

“No one ever has to convince me of that, Robert. You own my heart.”

He blinks away the shine of tears and I freeze, too afraid to say another word. Robert has always been massive and strong, like a hundred-year-old oak—firm, sure, grounded. But now he seems as fragile as a twig. I’m careful not to respond badly, too afraid I might snap him in two.

His mouth is a tight line. “But I lose you, Anna, in every lifetime. Death finds you when you’re very young, and I lose you...over and over again.”

The words turn to fire in my veins, smoldering in my body like embers atop gray ash. They ignite my
