Chapter Fifteen

Shannon stopped on the clinic's top step, pressing herself against the door after she'd closed it. Her heart felt like a wild thing trying to escape her chest, different from physical exertion. It hurt, an aching combination of distress and relief and fear and gladness. Aeolis Savio was her boss and it was all very complicated, but she didn't care about that.

All she cared about was that kiss, and the certainty she'd felt with his arm around her. Nothing in her whole life had ever felt so right. Not even standing on medal podiums, receiving accolades for the years of effort she'd put into her sport, had made her feel as whole as being in Aeolis's arms had. She had worked hard to earn those medals, but this…this, she'd just fallen into. Like it was magic.

"Shannon?" Ndleleni's voice broke her reverie, worry clear in the single word. Shannon opened her eyes, suddenly realizing what she must look like to others: covered in blood, eyes crushed shut, hand against her chest like she could hold her heart in place…and everyone knew Aeolis had been shot less than an hour ago.

"He's okay," she told Ndleleni swiftly. "Exhausted, but he's okay. He needs rest. He asked me to get his phone."

Relief swept Nido's face. "The raiders we blocked drove away just after you radioed, so we came back as quickly as we could, but…."

"He's okay," Shannon said again. Suddenly it was all she could do to not sink down on the clinic step and bury her face in her hands to weep with relief. Instead she came down the few stairs, shakily, and found Aeolis's phone in the footwell of the Jeep, lying in a half-dried, sticky mess of blood. Flies were buzzing around, although a wind had come up and was probably keeping the worst of them away. The light had changed, too: heavy clouds had come in from the horizons, threatening rain. Shannon, staring at the mess in the Jeep and all over the phone, said, "I should get this cleaned up before it rains," in a light, confused voice. Suddenly, looking at the blood everywhere, it all seemed more real. Too real.

"You've done enough," Ndleleni said gently. "Take him his phone. Clean yourself. I'll take care of the Jeep."

Shannon whispered, "Thank you," and went back into the clinic, knowing she was favoring her hip and not quite being able to stop herself.

Aeolis was half asleep on his bed, his color bad and his skin looking dehydrated. She put the phone aside, washed her hands, and got him water, which he thanked her for. "Rest a minute," she told him. "I've got to clean your phone up. I don't know if it's even going to work right now."

"Clean it?" He sounded light-headed, although his voice then cleared. "Ah. Blood? It's meant to be good to under two meters of water. A little blood shouldn't hurt it." He drank some more water, then fell into a light sleep.
