A Ghost in the Drain?

A college student doesn’t need surprises. Well, pleasant ones might be welcome, but not unpleasant ones such as those reported at Hoyum, a girls’ dorm at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Picture a freshman girl getting ready for a date. She looks in the mirror above the washbowls and sees a hooded and caped figure behind her, reflected in the mirror. Or she looks out from the shower to see the mysterious figure hovering just above the shower door. Definitely not a welcome surprise.

Or think of a student who has attended all her classes, endured a full hour of orchestra rehearsal, and then worked in the cafeteria line to earn her board. She’s tired, but she has to study a good three and a half hours in a dorm full of girls before she can go to bed.

Then, more than ready for sleep, she climbs up to her loft and flops down. She reaches to pull up her blanket. There, at the foot of her bed, on the same ladder she just climbed up seconds ago, is the horrid figure. She is sure the door was locked when she returned to her room after supper. No one was there when she came back from the bathroom. Was there a ghost in the dorm? The girls concluded that there was. They have proof.

Sometimes students who are known for their neat rooms will find them all out of order, clothing and books and papers strewn all over the floor. Locked doors open slowly in the early evening hours. Or radios and TVs are blaring when their owners are sure they had turned them off when they left their rooms. Sometimes, even in midwinter when the heat is on in the rooms and halls, a cold draft or a cold spot will be felt, always in the same part of the same rooms. Some of the girls wake up to their names being called out, but there’s no one around and the hall is perfectly quiet.

Probably the most alarming incident on Hoyum’s fifth floor made the girls wonder if their ghost liked water, lots of it. Or maybe lived in the bathtub drain and sewer lines. A bathtub faucet flooded their bathroom with hot water. Not once, but three times in a month.

Two inches of water on a bathroom floor and gallons of it seeping out under the door and into the carpeted hall is not a trick students would play on each other, especially when on their return from mid-semester break they had to work those first two hours sopping up the water or pay someone to bring in a wet/dry vac to clean up the rest of the water. One would hardly think the students enjoyed the mopping and the expense enough to cause the flood the second and third times. It had to be a ghost!

The girls were convinced. They agreed to be on the alert for proof, so that others could also be made to believe that Concordia’s Hoyum Hall also had a ghost, though it was not yet widely known.
