Just inside the front door in the central hall, the tour began with an introduction to both the Wyatt family and the house itself. Straight ahead of us was a staircase that led to the second floor. To the right was the reception or living room. It is here that the reports of spiritual happenings begin.

Each fall, when daylight hours shorten, guides lead “Flashlight Tours” through the house. On one memorable occasion, a participant who was standing near the fireplace in the living room felt a small child take her hand. The child accompanied her up the stairs and around the house, but refused to go into one room — the former nursery. Imagine the woman’s surprise when, later, she was shown a very old photograph of a child, two-year-old Ivan, laid out for funeral services, surrounded by flowers. Was it Ivan’s spirit who had accompanied the visitor that day? Had he died in the nursery? The photograph remains in one of the bedrooms to this day.

During my tour, as we were moving back into the hall, we paused at the bottom of the stairs where a portrait of a rather dour and stern-looking woman, Jessie Spencer (or Aunt Jessie, as she is usually referred to), hangs on the wall. Her portrait was painted by renowned artist Robert Harris. This is the most significant spot in the house according to our tour guide, Jean, who told us that people get the sense that Aunt Jessie’s eyes follow them as they pass by.

Aunt Jessie’s portrait hangs at the foot of the stairs, above the bottom step. The stairs are typical of the era, going up to a landing with a window, then turning to the right with a few more steps leading up to a large central hall with a large bedroom off each side and a bathroom at the end. As well, there are a few very steep steps straight ahead on the landing that lead to a full-size door to the attic. From the top to the bottom of the stairs there is a wall on the left side and a banister on the right. The attic door is set on the left side as one goes up the stairs, but looms above most people. It’s odd and probably difficult to get into.

That day, we climbed the stairs to the first landing, where our guide told us a number of people reported feeling a strong sense of pressure when they got to the landing, as if someone, or something, was trying to prevent them from continuing. I realized that I was rubbing my chest. At first I thought I was just winded from climbing the stairs, but it felt as if I was being pushed back, the pressure deterring me from climbing farther. When I learned that it was something that had been experienced by others, I felt as if I had joined the ranks of those who believe in the spirits of this house. Some people have even reported seeing a lady holding her hands out as if she didn’t want them there.
