Meanwhile the kids enrolled in school; we bought a car. This marshal in Nebraska is a sweetheart-of-a-guy. He had a female partner. The marshals had connections in all these towns with everything. One marshal took us to a car lot where they had a connection, so they cleared my credit immediately. I had no credit history at all under my new name-I didn't have bad credit, I didn't have good credit. The marshals took the kids into school and told the teachers, "We can't tell you anything-this is government business. These kids just came from a location that we can't disclose." They never told people that we were in the Witness Protection Program, so the principal of the school-or whoever they spoke to-didn't know if I was a CIA agent or what. I couldn't participate in their schooling, though, so Karen did all that stuff. I tried to give them everything, and yet it was nothing. We were a loving family, but I felt like a piece of shit.
