WHAT WAS WRONG WITH WONDER-WORKING FAITH?

So, if we can believe the promises of God and still be lost, what does it take to make this believing real? In Matthew 7:23 Jesus called the deceived “workers of lawlessness.” So their resistance to the “will” of God (v. 21) and their giving in to “lawlessness” (v. 23) betrayed the true condition of their hearts, and the absence of authentic faith. We must not simply say, “What they needed was works alongside their faith.” No, the faith was defective. We know this because Jesus said three verses earlier, “A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit” (Matthew 7:18). Which means that the fruit of obedience does not come in alongside a tree and make it good, but the authentic health of the tree is what produces the fruit of obedience.

The questions then, are What’s wrong with the faith of these very religious people? And why did their faith (which could prophesy and exorcise and do miracles!) not produce the good fruit that Jesus calls “the will of my Father who is in heaven” (v. 21)? What would turn the “faith,” which they thought they had, into sanctifying, and thus saving, faith? What is the essence of faith in future grace?
