WE RETURNED to my house to celebrate our mating. Since Dolf hadn’t warned the elders, there would be no food waiting. Tradition was always the elder wives brought food and left it for us. Usually the only ones at the so-called celebration were the Alpha, the rank, the elders, and the mated couple.

If it was a male/female match, the female would be the only woman there. That was what happened when Sam and Janelle mated. Of course, just because Dolf didn’t tell the elders about our mating, didn’t mean he was unprepared. Before we left the Circle, he informed me he and his mates would be a little late.

They needed to stop by his home and pick up the food they intended to bring. I should have known. I gave my keys to Aidric and told him to let everybody in at my house while Marshell and I stopped and picked up drinks. After a quick trip to the store, we arrived home.

I was relieved to see Lawson was there, even though he shouldn’t have been, according to tradition. But then I saw Sam and Janelle who were also there—and neither of them held rank. They too shouldn’t have been invited. Which she knew.

A blind man could see Janelle’s smirk.

Dolf and his mates arrived shortly after us with the food. After Kirk ran me out of my own kitchen, I joined Marshell in the living area. Conversation was somewhat stilted, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying.

The elders were stiff lipped and didn’t have much to say. It irked me, but as long as nobody outright insulted my mate in his own house, there wasn’t much I could do about it. No one was surprised to see the elders leave after an appropriate amount of time had passed. I imagined first thing tomorrow, Dolf would have company.

The food was eaten, the drinks were drunk, and we all had a good time. One by one our company left until only Heller and Lawson, Dolf, Kirk, and Tal remained. I brought Dolf another beer and plopped down on the couch next to Marshell.

“Thanks.” Dolf took a sip. “After this I guess my mates and I had better get on home.”

Heller fiddled with a string on a blanket next to him. Finally he cleared his throat. “Dolf, if you have a few minutes, I have something I’d like to say to you.”

“I have all the time you need.”

“Remi, I’m sorry to do this on your day, but I consider all of you here friends. I like Aidric and Brier, but I’m not as close to them as I am with you guys. So….”

Lawson put his arm around Heller’s shoulders. “You can do this, hellcat.”

Heller took a long breath and slowly let it out. “I’ve apologized to Kirk for the way I acted in the beginning. As everybody here knows, I had a problem with humans. What none of you knew was why.”

Lawson held Heller as Heller recounted how he found his sister murdered by a human she fell in love with.
