In this section, we discuss fundamental benchmarks for communication over a bandlimited AWGN channel.
Theorem 6.1.1 For an AWGN channel of bandwidth W and received power P, the channel capacity is given by the formula

Let us first discuss some implications of this formula, and then provide some insight into why the formula holds, and how one would go about achieving the rate promised by (6.1).
Consider a communication system that provides an information rate of R bit/s. Denoting by Eb the energy per information bit, the transmitted power is P = EbR. For reliable transmission, we must have R < C, so that we have from (6.1):
