Preparation Time

What came next in the ancient Hebrew wedding is where we stand now, at present, in our time on earth before Christ returns for us. It is the meat of how physical intimacy, I believe, reveals gospel truth. The time between the groom’s departure and his return, as the bride awaited him, was and is a period of kiddushin, or sanctification.

The bride entered a season of time in which she was to be set apart from the world, sanctified and in preparation. So we too, the bride of Christ, must be fully focused and intent on making ourselves ready for our Bridegroom’s return to receive us. We must know true and transformational intimacy with God, one of the primary missions of the Holy Spirit in our lives, so that we are ready when He returns; we are set apart, being made holy and pure.

Ephesians 5:25–27 says, “[Christ] gave up his life for [the church] to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault” (NLT). Revelation 3:4 guides us toward this intimate and dynamic interaction with the Holy Spirit in reminding us we must be people who have not soiled our garments but who will “walk with [Him] in white.” In this time of sanctification by the Holy Spirit we are, from whatever state we are currently in, to be washed in Christ’s blood through His death (Rev. 7:14) and kept pure as virgins through sanctification by his Spirit (14:4).

But how do we do this? What does intimacy with the Holy Spirit look like? What model can we look to for help in understanding sanctification and the power of the Holy Spirit’s purpose in our lives? The completion of the ancient Hebrew wedding includes the return of the bridegroom and, ultimately, the marriage feast that is still to come, but as we’ll discuss later, physical intimacy is a prophetic picture God has given us to look to in order to understand the consecrating power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
