Chapter Twenty-One

There was no time to lose, and Maisie was already in a panic.

The summer festival was basically a month away, and she knew the length of the to-do list needed to run a successful event, especially one with multiple businesses and stallholders involved. And that was when it was straightforward, and didn’t include moving the entire thing from one location to another.

‘Let’s do this, Sprout,’ she said, hoping it would fire her up, too. She could feel sweat pooling at the base of her spine as she walked from the ironmonger’s towards the primary school.

It was Friday afternoon, and she’d left Sandy in the shop, wanting to catch Jeremy now that the school day was over.

Since Monday, the day after the photo shoot with Charlie that had kicked this whole thing off, she had been doing the groundwork. Anisha was high up in the planning team at the council, and Maisie had gone straight to her because, without her buy-in, the entire plan would come to nothing. Anisha had been calm and practical, and had called an emergency meeting with her team.

She had come back to Maisie on Wednesday, saying the plan had been approved, and that she and her colleagues would arrange the necessary permits for temporary trading, the permissions needed, as long as Maisie could find locations for all the food and craft businesses, the events and performances that were due to move a little way up the coast.

Maisie had assured her she could, and had immediately tackled the most straightforward places, the ones where she knew she would get a yes. Thea was fully on board with A New Chapter, and Meredith had spoken to her boss Adrian, who was happy for anything to happen in Cornish Keepsakes as long as Meredith was in charge of it. But there would be a lot of businesses coming from out of town, who didn’t have shops to trade from, and Maisie needed to secure enough undercover space for them all.

She said hello to an older couple who regularly came into the shop to buy bird seed, and it made her think of Mr and Mrs Arthur. She hadn’t been to see them for a few weeks, and her dad hadn’t given her an update. She made a mental note to add it to her to-do list. First, however, she had to get this out of the way. The school was her secret, all-weather weapon for the festival, and standing between her and success was Jeremy.

She thought about how, when they’d finally got the right shots in Porthgolow, Colm had tried to talk to her, and she had batted his concerns away. When, the day after the shoot, he’d resorted to texting her, she had told him she was talking to Anisha, that everything was fine, and then changed the subject. Since then their messages had been constant and easy, as if Colm’s frustration on the beach had been a temporary glitch. But it still felt a long way from their night at the Sea Shanty, and the plans they’d made to spend more time together.
