"Gage!" I yelled as I tried to tackle the other vampire.

Faster and more powerful, the vampire dodged my attempt to grab him and went after Alexander again.

Gage scrambled out from behind his rock pile and ran toward us.

"It feels like we've done this before," I grumbled.

Alexander didn't reply, but I sensed that he knew what I meant. We'd had much the same fight with Yoshi last summer though he hadn't actually been trying to kill us.

This vampire, however, was trying. He had a wild look in his eyes that hadn't been there before, and I suspected he was on the verge of losing control to his hunger. How he could be hungry after all the Sidhe I suspected he'd killed, I wasn't sure. The large rip in his shirt was a clue. Perhaps he'd been badly injured.

The vampire went after Alexander again, and I dove between them, letting him catch me instead of Alexander.

"Use your sunlight!"

The vampire grabbed my shoulders and, fingers digging painfully into bone, threw me to the ground. "Stay!"

Crying out as rocks dug into my back and snapped a rib, I tried to roll, but my body wouldn't respond. Damn it!

Something wet soaked into my jeans, and I smelled blood.

The vampire froze mid-lunge toward Alexander and inhaled deeply. Turning back toward me, his eyes narrowed and he dove toward me.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alexander scramble backward until he stood with Gage. Then the vampire flipped me over and tugged something out of my pocket while I lay there with a face full of fragrant grass.

The blood smell overpowered the crushed grass. My flask. He'd taken Yoshi's blood. What was left of it anyway. By the wet feeling on my pants, the flask had broken on a rock when he'd thrown me to the ground. I heard him unscrew the cap and growl slightly as he downed the contents of my flask.

Shit.

The blood must have distracted him, however, because the next time I tried to move, my limbs responded. Jumping to my feet, I ran over to the guys and placed myself between them and the vampire.

"Who's that?" Alexander whispered.

"Not sure. He followed us here somehow."

"Great."

Finished, the vampire threw the flask to the ground and turned his attention back toward us.

"Bring your friends to me." He smiled.

No! I wanted to shout, but I could only struggle with myself as my body tried to obey his command. There was no way I'd give in to that command without a fight.

"He's trying to control you?" Alexander put his hand on my arm, and I felt him push into my mind and lend his support to my resistance.

I wasn't sure what we did, but we managed to fight him off at least enough so that, while I couldn't do anything else, at least I wasn't turning my friends over.

The vampire arched his eyebrows. "Interesting. Didn't anyone tell you to kill the Sidhe if you fed from them?" He giggled, seeming terribly amused. "No matter, I'll take you both.
