Chapter 9

Valerio

I fucked up this morning.

Right now, I could only be thankful that Maize hadn’t found another way to kick me out of our home. The worst part? She wasn’t completely wrong in doing so. I’d been so caught up in her being taken from me, I’d lost track of the woman I was protecting and how she would feel about my actions. I just felt thankful that she’d forgiven me and found it more amusing now than anything.

I shouldn’t have been surprised about it, but that was Maize—constantly surprising me. She sat next to me at the kitchen counter, looking a far cry better than she had when we’d carried her out of the Dark Fae military post. In fact, she seemed more focused on Raziel and explaining what had happened with the woman in the mirror than any of my bullshit.

I was perfectly content with her forgetting it and forgiving me…but it wouldn’t stop me from getting a new tracker crafted for her. This time it really would be just a tracker, though, and I planned on having it handmade by a metal mage so that it fit who Maize was perfectly. I knew she would understand it was a functional piece of equipment, but I wanted her to view it as a gift instead. Just one of the ways I wanted to spoil her.

Honestly though, considering the lack of sleep I’d gotten and now getting used to this mate bond, I really was trying to fight the urge to just carry her upstairs. It was rare for me to not be motivated for the day, but right now I was exhausted and wanted to hold her.

After she had gotten ready, she found her way right back to me, freshly dressed in the Red Masques uniform we’d given her. To wear to the Pixie Circle.

I felt like we were constantly being exposed to new information, and I could feel it accumulating, weighing us down with the serious nature of this entire situation. I found myself fearing what it would lead to. I didn’t doubt we could handle it, but I didn’t want Maize going through anything else. She deserved better.

I wasn’t as perceptive of her desires as Charm, but I could feel what she feared now to a small extent, and one of those fears was that everything in her life that was good would take a turn for the worse. I didn’t know what I had to do to stop that thought from haunting her, but I could prevent it. I would do whatever I could to make sure our girl still had a smile on her face when all of this was over.

Zagan would die.

The SE guards responsible for these horrible actions would be punished.

Even Oberon would suffer.

But Maize would leave all of this smiling.

“Twelve hours from then is this evening,” she pointed out to the rest of us. “I was hoping to meet with Brielle beforehand. Have we managed to get in contact with her?”
