Mike and Sharice were snuggled on her couch watching an episode of Highway to Heaven. During times when they were cuddling like this Mike figured that either Sharice had been born with the use of only four of her five senses or was the best actress in the world, because she seemed oblivious to the erections that their close contact would bring about, including the one that was currently rubbing up against her thigh.

“Do you have any plans for Thanksgiving?” he asked.

“No, I don’t.”

“Then why don’t you spend Thanksgiving with me at my parents’ house?”

There was a pause before Sharice spoke. “I don’t know, Mike.”

“C’mon, Sharice. What are you gonna do, put a turkey potpie in the oven? You know it’s a sin to spend Thanksgiving alone. It says so right in the Good Book.”

That made her smile. “Oh, yeah? Where does it say that?”

“Um, you know, Third Corinthians, chapter two, addendum 1A. ‘Thou shall never pass up a home-cooked meal.’ Declining a Thanksgiving dinner is an abomination, so sayeth the Lord.”

Sharice laughed. “You know full well that’s not in there.”

Mike was enjoying her playfulness. “Well, if it isn’t, it should be,” he continued. “As a matter of fact, that might be one of the missing books. It’s probably written in the Dead Sea Scrolls.”

“Besides, I wouldn’t be alone,” Sharice said. “You’d be sitting right next to me with your potpie, right?” She raised her head to look at him and gave him a squeeze.

“Sharice, you know how fond I am of you, but if you think I’m gonna incur the wrath of my mom by skipping out on Thanksgiving, then you got another think coming. My mother ain’t above going upside my head.”

Sharice chuckled and laid her head back on Mike’s chest.

“So, what do you say?” he asked.

“Who all is gonna be there?”

“My parents, my brother, Erika, my grandmother, some of my aunts and uncles, a couple of cousins.”

“That’s it?”

“Yeah.” Mike had a feeling he knew why she was reluctant. “It’s just family.”

“Erika isn’t family.”

Bingo. “She might as well be. My parents treat her like their daughter. But she’ll be the only one there not part of my family, unless my brother brings someone with him from school.” Mike hesitated before adding, “Ib, Dex and Colin go to their parents’ for Thanksgiving.”

“Why did you feel the need to tell me that?” she asked, keeping her eyes on the TV.

“Just to let you know that you wouldn’t be seeing them,” Mike said cautiously.

He felt her body tense up. “Why would I care if I saw them?”

Mike wanted to choose his next words carefully. One, he wanted to be diplomatic as possible and spare her feelings. Second, Sharice felt good as hell rubbed up next to him, so he didn’t want to piss her off and get shown the door again.

“I was concerned that you were thinking that they might see you as you were, instead of as you are. Not letting you evolve.”

“Oh.” Mike felt her body relax, but she still didn’t look at him.
