CHAPTER 11

My heavy legs carried me upstairs to my apartment. Going home felt like I’d failed Mina. I still had no idea where she was being held, and I was guessing at the best approach. Part of me felt like an imposter. Despite Caton’s new interest in me, I still heard his voice telling me I was a weak excuse for a witch. The critical part of my brain told me I’d leaped to conclusions in finding the coin at the warehouse, while my gut told me it was connected.

Faith had told me about Dagna, so we knew she was in town and active. It was no coincidence that I had now found the dark coins she’d made on Darius and in the warehouse. Dagna might not have kidnapped Mina, but she was working with Rerek’s priests, which meant she could lead me to them.

Some of the burden was lifted when I saw Hunter holding a glass of wine in my living room. “I thought you could use this. I have a bubble bath drawn for you as well.”

I accepted the wine from him and placed a kiss on his lips. “This is great. I’m not sure I can relax while Mina is missing.”

Hunter wrapped his arms around my waist and gathered me against his body. “You have to try and get some rest, so you’re ready for later. I still have my people out there looking. Carnell has his contacts in the closest towns between here and Roanoke, searching. And if Caton has his warlocks out there, we have the entire area more than covered.”

I grimaced, and my stomach churned when he mentioned Caton. “I’m not sure Caton is thinking straight.”

“That sounds like it’s for more reasons than because his daughter is missing. What happened?”

Moving away from Hunter, I sipped the wine. “I think he’s seeing me for who I am for the first time. And it’s renewed his interest in me. I’m not sure my rebuttal set him straight. I don’t want him and need him to stay focused on Mina. Nothing else matters.”

Hunter grunted as he extended a hand to me. “His interest has been growing for weeks. It’s unfortunate he realized how he was feeling now. There’s nothing you can do to make him focus where you want. Your friends have your back, and we have dozens of people out looking. Right now, you need to take care of yourself. You’re no good to Mina if you don’t.”

I sighed as I took his hand. “I don’t know how to stop obsessing about finding her. My heart is in pieces, and my gut is in knots.”

Hunter tugged me closer. “I have some ideas about how to distract you.”

A smile curved one corner of my mouth when he waggled his eyebrows. It was clear that Hunter wanted to distract me. He wasn’t coming on to me because he was callous and uncaring. He truly wanted me to have a few minutes of a reprieve from the gut-wrenching fear that had consumed me since watching Mina get shoved into a van and taken from us.
