OWYN JERKED, HEARING someone calling his name. He scrubbed one hand over his face and frowned, trying to think, trying to wake up. Who was looking for him? And why? He looked around, then crawled out from underneath the overgrown bench where he’d been sleeping. He heard the voice and barely recognized it as familiar. He couldn’t think of the name. Just...

“No,” he whispered. If he was caught with whoever that was, he’d get in trouble. He couldn’t get caught. If he got caught, the guards would hurt him. He needed a better hiding place. He needed to get away from the people, get low, get back into Forge and get onto the roofs. He could hide on the roofs. He ducked into the underbrush and started moving, away from the voices, going slowly and deliberately so he couldn’t give himself away. When the voices got too close, he froze, waiting for them to pass, then started moving once more, threading his way through overgrown brush and poorly maintained paths. Where was he?

He’d reached what looked like fairly fresh rockfall before his half-awake panic finally faded, and he finally remembered that he wasn’t in Forge anymore. That he was in Terraces, that he was free, and that no one was going to hurt him anymore. He stopped, hearing the distant rumble of thunder as he turned and looked through the growing darkness. He couldn’t hear anyone calling him anymore. Had they stopped looking? Maybe. It was getting dark, and it was going to storm. The people searching were probably smart enough to get out of the rain, even if he wasn’t.

Where could he go? Back to Fourteen, and hope that Memfis would leave him alone? Or he could go to the healing complex, and sleep on Aven’s floor. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d slept on the floor. No. Aven needed to heal. If Owyn went there, Aven would fuss and try to take care of him, and not take care of himself. Had Aria told Aven that Owyn was missing? Mother, he hoped not.

For a moment, he considered going and finding Teva. That had been who had been calling for him, he was fairly sure. If he went and found Teva, he’d have someplace else to go, and probably something better than a floor to sleep on. But what would he have to do, to get that?

No. He had given up paying for a bed and meal with that coin years ago. He wasn’t going back to it, no matter what Memfis thought of him. He looked up at the sky, then at the rockfall. No way up that way, and he started to retrace his steps. Before he reached another set of stairs leading up to the next terrace, the rain had started, fat, cold raindrops that hit his skin hard enough to sting. He hunched over slightly and cupped his hand over his pocket to try and protect Trinket. By the time he reached the top
