Isaacâs internal pain was etched on his face. Kate wished there was something she could do to ease it. When she lifted her hand to his face, he captured it and kissed her palm. Then he gently rotated her hips so she was once more leaning back against him, his arms circling her. She smiled when the blankets floated up around them. Even dealing with his own pain, he thought of her comfort.
He didnât have to voice the words for her to understand that sometimes it was easier to talk when you werenât facing the person you were talking to. She picked up one of his hands in both of hers and trailed one finger along his palm and then each of his fingers.
Isaacâs hands were scarred and strong, just like him. Sheâd watched him work before and admired what he could do, especially the magic tattoos. But not once had she considered that there could be a cost for him.
She continued to trace his fingers and slowly massage his hands but didnât speak. The urge to ask him about his brother was so strong it felt like it had its own pulse within her body, but she refused to heed it.
Isaac had never pushed her to talk, only asked and waited. It was her turn to do the same for him.
âAustin was five years younger than me,â Isaac said quietly, finally breaking the silence. âHe was only sixteen when our dad died. It felt like the worst thing that could ever happen to us.â
Kate didnât say she understood, because this was Isaacâs story, but she did understand. More than she wished she did. Sheâd been a young teenager when her own dad died.
She continued to lazily rub Isaacâs hand. After several minutes, she thought Isaac wasnât going to say any more, but then he spoke again.
âWhen Austin was eighteen, he asked me for a memorial tattoo for our dad. By that time, Iâd been tattooing for more than five years professionally, so I thought it would be a piece of cake. But when I put my hands on Austin my magic rejected the idea of the tattoo. I told Austin I wouldnât do it, but he hounded me for six months until I gave in. A few months later, he was dead because the tattoo drove him crazy.â
Kateâs specialty was sensing feelings in objects, not people, but in that moment, she swore she could feel Isaacâs pain in his hands. Pushing some heat into her own hands, she cupped both of his in both of hers, letting her warmth seep into him. It wouldnât ease the pain of his loss, but maybe the heat would feel good.
If she had never pushed for him to help her, maybe he wouldnât be reliving his pain right now.
Not only had she projected her pain and insecurities onto Isaac, sheâd forced him to deal with something painful in his own past. Now it was her turn.
âI was about ten or so when I saw the Disney movie Mulan.
