GABRIEL

I can see the minute my meaning becomes clear to her. I was one hundred percent serious when I said the house and I were both waiting for her. I’d built it so it was ready for us whenever I got Seraphina back, but I continued to live in an apartment. This house is meant to be ours, right from the very beginning. I didn’t want her to walk into it filled with my things alone; her first impression would be that it was my house. I certainly wasn’t about to decorate it. This house begged to be made a home by Seraphina. It waited for her brightness, her quirkiness, and I wanted her to see nothing but blank canvas.

“This is amazing, Gabriel,” she says quietly. “I—I don’t even know what to say.”

“Tell me what color to paint the walls.” I grin. She laughs and as always, I’m captivated by the sound.

As she looks around again, worry creeps into her expression, her brow furrowing. I can virtually see the cogs turning in her mind and I know whatever line of thinking is growing, I need to nip it in the bud.

I take her hand and give her the grand tour, watching her face light up with pleasure at the small things. We only briefly stop in the small room next to the master suite. I don’t want her looking too closely as there are things in the closet I want to keep hidden for now. Studying her as her eyes sweep the room, I wonder if she realizes what this room is intended for. I don’t give her time to ponder it, guiding her out and into the next room.

“Sweet angel babies, what the fuck is that?” Seraphina is staring at the one piece of furniture in the house I picked out. I walk up behind her and slip my arms around her waist, resting my chin on her shoulder.

“It’s exactly what it looks like, baby. It’s a bed.” I’d custom ordered this bed from a Fae I’d been the Guardian Angel for until I became an Arch Angel. He was a furniture craftsman and amazingly talented. He’d created a rod iron frame weaving in and out of itself, the lattice work like branches and tiny metal leaves and blooming lilies appear here and there. It has four tall posts with a connected rail around the top so it can be used as a canopy, but looks beautiful uncovered, as well. But, what’s truly unique, the bed is huge, well beyond what American humans refer to as a California King (which I find odd because not only is California not the largest state . . . there is no king. But, whatever, humans also think faeries and angels have wings. Clearly, they have their own warped reality). I’m a big guy and while I could sleep comfortably in a smaller bed than this, I wanted plenty of room to be . . . active.

Her head gives a small shake, swishing her hair into my face, the soft strands filling my nose with her intoxicating scent.
