Chapter Eighteen

Nic heard noise around her and, turning towards it, she tried to force her eyes open but something stopped them from complying. Reaching up, she felt her face. Gauze covered her eyes. Nic tried to speak but her mouth wouldn’t move.

What the hell is going on, she thought. The harder she tried to talk, the more painful it became. She was in a world of darkness and she couldn’t see, she couldn’t speak, and she had no idea where she was or how to get help. She slipped a finger inside her lip and felt the wires keeping her mouth shut. The pain shooting through her face was excruciating. The more she tried to work her mouth open, the worse it got. Finally, she groaned when a sharp pain shot through her jaw.

“Colonel, you’re okay. You’re just waking up from some medication we had to give you to keep you still. I was just getting ready to remove the bandages before you woke up. Try and relax.”

Nic felt the cold steel of scissors slide between the side of her face and the gauze. The sound as they sliced through the material sent a quick shiver, giving her goose bumps. Dim light started to peek through as someone pulled the bandages away from her face. She’d barely opened them when another sharp pain radiated in her head. The lights in the room weren’t on, but it was bright enough that Nic shielded her eye. Her right eye remained covered.

“Don’t open your eye too quickly. Let it get acclimated to the light in the room,” someone said, but Nic still couldn’t see them.

Nic tried to force her eye open, but it felt so heavy, like weights were keeping it closed, and again it fell closed. A beeping sound caught her attention, so she focused on that. It sounded like…a heartbeat, her heartbeat? Pushing herself, she just needed to sit up, get her feet under her, and she would be fine, she kept telling herself. Forcing herself up, she tried to reach for something, anything to assist her in a futile attempt to stand. At least she thought she could stand.

“Colonel, you need to lie still,” said someone she didn’t recognize.

Nic could only hear a garbled noise as she tried to answer.

“Colonel, your jaw is wired shut. Would you like a sip of water?”

Confused, Nic could only see shadows when a light from a pen light snapped on somewhere in the room. She opened her mouth and tried to say something again, but the pain almost made her black out. Her head reeled and hit the pillow before she could do anything. The headache was unbearable and she could use something for the pain.

Christ, what the fuck happened, she thought. Her mind was blank as she tried to remember where she was and what had happened.

She flinched as someone touched her arm.

“It’s all right, Colonel. I just need to listen to your lungs and I’ll call the doctor in so he can brief you on what’s happened.
