Chapter ten

Enemies are Circling

The rest of the night was uneventful. No other trucks were attacked, but Adrian knew the real enemy still posed a threat.

When Adrian returned to the compound, covered in human blood, he briefed his adviser on what occurred. Royce’s face conveyed warring expressions of longing and disgust as he regarded the red splatter on Adrian’s pristine white shirt. Part of him no doubt craved the life-giving liquid, while the other part despised the mess.

Royce was good at appearing insouciant by the news, but his silence was deafening. He was in deep thought, strategically working the puzzle in his mind.

“There is a traitor in our midst, then,” he said, with determination in his steely eyes. “I will drain the Council dry so I can dive into their minds; the few drops I normally sample may not have been enough to expose their deception. Then, if I determine they are innocent, I will go through every vampire we have ever turned until we find the truth. There will be no exceptions.”

Royce always went to the furthest extremes when challenged. Unfortunately, he didn’t think about the repercussions of his behavior. The actions he suggested would cause community-wide panic and resentment among the vampires. Sure, it might reveal the traitor, but it would just as likely turn their own people against them.

“Let’s hold off on forming an inquisition,” Adrian said. “We’ll find another way.”

Royce scowled at Adrian and propped his hands on his hips.

Adrian removed his destroyed shirt and washed his face. His adviser grew more relaxed as the blood ran down the drain.

“What would you suggest, my king?” Royce asked.

“Isn’t that what you are here for? To offer me suggestions and nudge me in the right direction.”

Royce gave a humorless laugh. “I have tried to do just that, but you often refuse to be nudged.”

“I guess that’s fair.”

Their conversation was interrupted by a brief knock on the ajar office door as it slowly pushed open. Moira stood at the threshold, looking concerned. She was out of breath like she had rushed to find them.

She brushed some of her red hair away from her face.

“Is everyone okay? Kellan sent me here and said I might need to do some mending.”

“That Irishman always underestimates me.” Adrian snickered, pushing his arms into the sleeves of a clean, white shirt. He couldn’t help but notice Moira glancing at his chest as he slipped the button-up over his shoulders. “But no, we are more than fine. The saboteurs could've used some fae magic, but it’s too late for them.”

“Oh…” Moira seemed a little lost. “Okay, well, let me know if you need me. I’ll be downstairs.”

She turned to leave, but Adrian had other plans.

“Moira, wait.”

She turned, looking at him expectantly.

“Would you like to go out to dinner tonight? A working dinner, of course. It’s on me.”

Moira blinked. She opened her mouth to speak but then shut it again. She glanced uncomfortably at Royce and then back to Adrian. “You and me?”

Adrian shrugged. “Just us. Need to bounce some ideas off you.
