Chapter

Nineteen

All of our plans were out the window. Neither Kate nor I expected that Dax would want me at the full moon party after keeping me locked up and away from the rest of the pack since my return. The only other people I’d seen aside from Dax, Xander, and Kate were the elders for a brief moment when I’d been in Dax’s house. The memory of the decapitated heads flashed into view and I squeezed my eyes closed, trying to push the thought away. I didn’t want to remember that. Especially since there was so much conflict that accompanied it. Knowing Madoc was responsible sent a surge of guilt, but at the same time, I was grateful he’d been able to defend himself. The bond had a way of making me feel like a traitor to the pack, and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to be a part of it anymore. It made everything so much more confusing than necessary.

Dax’s desire to have me at the full moon party added to the confusion. When I was under the false bond, he had paraded me around and was obvious with his affections. I knew he was telling people that we were still romantically involved, possibly even that we had a mating bond, but he had kept me cloistered away. Add in the guards and it was difficult to see what his intentions were. Did people in the pack seriously think they were guarding me for my own protection? How did they buy that when they never saw us together?

Oh.

That was his game. He needed to remind everyone of our relationship. Fuck me.

“I really thought he’d keep you here until you cracked,” Kate said. “Not that I thought you would crack, but his original leverage was me. Do you think he has something else on you?”

Xander’s leverage was his mistake with his magic, but that wasn’t the same for me. I considered the shifter that I had accidentally killed. I hadn’t recognized him, which meant he was either new to the pack or he hadn’t come into the Howler regularly. That was far less likely, since most of the adult shifters spent at least some time at the bar. I knew a lot more of the pack members than I realized when I stopped to think about the fact that I had brought them all drinks. That had to be part of the appeal of having me on his arm. I was certain Dax would leverage the ‘poor little foundling who rose through the ranks’ angle. The pack might not show me kindness, but they all knew who I was.

I scowled, anger making me squeeze my hands into fists until my fingernails bit into my palm. I hated that Dax had used me and I hated that he was continuing to do so while I remained locked away here. He was likely spinning some tale about how much he cared for me. It was wrong.

“Ivy, you need to take some deep breaths,” Kate warned.
