The jet landed as quietly as when we’d taken off, and it felt as if we went down vertically instead of a descending horizontal. Dominic and his scientists had been extremely busy and once again made me think of all the vampire covens working in isolation from each other. To move forward in our war with the hellspawn, we would have to break down the barriers that existed because of the insular lives vampires had evolved over the centuries.

Our movements were silent, our figures nothing more than shadows as we crossed the landscape and made our way to the entrance Radar had identified with a little help from Cooper. For someone who had spent his life tormenting others, he had an incredibly low threshold for pain.

The hatch doorway required an eight-digit password that Cooper had handed over readily to save himself from another round of interrogations. From liberating several compounds, we had discovered that Castus and Cooper were the only vampires who had visited them all. Castus tended to keep all his people separate from one another, his experiments isolated so no one could ever guess his overall plan.

That plan had slowly been revealed to us, and it had been one of misery and tyranny. Castus wanted to rule all of the vampire race, exterminate the lycans, and have the humans as our own personal blood supply. He visualised a world where we no longer lived in covens but inhabited the cities and took what we wanted along the way. He was going to be self-appointed king and indulge in whatever his heart desired. To accomplish this, he was going to breed a new race of vampires and harvest their abilities to incorporate into himself.

He had realised that some vampires were different to others, but he had never researched vampire lore, so he was unaware of the golden gene theory and that the vampires who possessed it descended from a different bloodline. He would never have been able to wield our abilities because he was nothing more than a basic vampire.

The hatch opened with a hiss, and Radar flipped it over to reveal a metal tube with a staircase along the side of it.

Levi sighed and stepped forward. “I’ll go first in case we have anyone waiting for us down there.” He lowered himself into the hole and disappeared.

If my mate was disappearing into the abyss, then I was going next. I slipped down, thankful that the opening was wide enough to accommodate my bag over my shoulder. Levi’s hands grasped my waist and lifted me off the bottom of the ladder.

“Could you not have let someone else go next?” he groaned in my ear. “You’re trying to kill me.”

We moved out of the way just in time to see Dominic descend without using the ladder. His coat flared out around him to display all his weapons. He landed in a crouch, his eyes bright with excitement, and his fangs lowered. The guy was a bit of a psychopath who loved to fight, kill, and claim extra vampires for his coven.
