Tasha

The world I found myself in had no light. Rooms had been created in an elaborate cave network. The walls were rough rock, and the ceiling was so high I could barely make it out. Trepidation made my heart beat faster in a death march.

“We created this haven far from the rest of the world,” Castus said as he led me further into this midnight world. “The lycans were destroying us one coven at a time, their vicious army killing everything in its path, including children. They didn’t care who they murdered in their quest for ultimate power. I found this cave centuries ago and began to create a new home for us.”

He made it sound like a paradise when in reality it felt like a prison.

“My scientists moved most of their research here to protect it from prying eyes.” He turned to face me, taking my hands in his. “You are safe here, Tasha. The beast who attacked you will never find you here.”

“What happened?”

He shook his head and pursed his thin lips. “Doctor Ramore says it is best to let your memories return on their own. He doesn’t want us to try and force you to remember.” Castus continued to hold one of my hands as he directed his tour.

A huge chamber off the main cavern held the science department filled with bleeping machines and people in white uniforms. The further into the unit we walked, the more panic bells rang in my head. People lay in glass pods with tubes attaching them to a machine at the top of the pod.

“Are they dead?” I asked in a low tone, touching the cold glass.

“No, they’re in stasis until we can heal them.” He stood beside me and stared at the woman lying there. “Many of them were severely injured, others were a danger to themselves, and some of their minds were broken beyond what modern technology can fix.”

“I don’t understand.”

Castus took a staggered breath. “As coven leader, I am charged with protecting my people. That is not an easy task. A lycan bite is fatal, and before death it can make their victim lose their mind. I do not want to watch my people die, so I had them put in stasis until we can find a cure to save them.”

His words sounded noble but felt false.

“Is that what happened to me?”

Castus’ eyes narrowed. “Are you remembering anything?”

“No.” I shook my head. “But you’re talking about lycan attacks and I wondered.”

There were times that I doubted my name was Tasha because it didn’t feel familiar when they called me it. “Was I like this?”

“For a while. They used an experimental drug on you.”

There was nothing to say, so I stared at all the pods that held lifeless vampires in them. Finally, I turned away because I no longer wanted to look at the living dead. The huge room suddenly closed in around me and felt too small, my breathing became erratic, and I struggled to get air into my lungs.
