Chapter 12: SOPHIE

My heart leaps into my throat, and I stop dead.

The light flicks on, and if I didn’t know before, I know I’m busted.

The million alibis? They’re all gone. I had apparently expected to be in a less incriminating position than crouched under his desk, a drawer open, and a folder abandoned on the floor.

“Um…”

I abandon the mysterious paper and grab the escapee to begin my shameful scoot backwards.

He’s standing in the doorway, arms crossed, expression severe.

“You know what? Don’t even try to make excuses. At least respect me that much.”

The disappointment in his voice is what twists the knife in my chest.

“I thought the whole point of this was that we don’t share personal details.”

I purse my mouth together, refusing to let him bully me with a shaming.

“Well, maybe I wouldn’t have resorted to this if you were less suspicious.”

“Suspicious?” His tone is incredulous, outright offended.

“The weird evasions about your past relationships? Being able to just surf and take care of dogs all day between taking constant secretive phone calls? You can’t blame me for being worried that I’m involved with someone I shouldn’t be.”

“Oh, so if you’re going to ask me questions about my life, suppose we should make it fair and take turns, huh? I could ask you why you’re so unhappy that you decide going on a little rebellious streak in a foreign country is a good idea, or how you can afford to do it. I could ask you why you wanted to give your virginity to a stranger. Huh? Do you want to do that?”

I stand up, throat burning, heart beating like a drum.

“That’s not—”

“That’s not what? Fair? You’re the one who wanted it to be like this. You wanted secrets, you wanted us to only know what we were willing to tell. So if you’re so sure you want to know things, I’ll start first—”

I hurry towards him, clamping my hand over his mouth. I don’t know why those words make me panic so much; if I know more about him, it’s not like some sort of spell is broken. In fact, knowing things about him makes him more real.

And that’s the point.

This isn’t supposed to be real. It’s supposed to be a daydream, a mirage from the summer heat, a mysterious fling I can fondly look back on without any burdens or expectations.

He glares at me over my hand and takes hold of my wrist. There's no violence in the way he pulls my hand away, but the firm grip indents my skin and makes it clear he is in no mood for it. Worst of all, the pressure on my wrist activates very recently taught reflexes, and I feel a weakness in my legs beneath me. This is absolutely the worst time to start getting horny again, but apparently my body is a bit of a glutton for his particular sort of manhandling.

The frustration about my body’s betrayal pushes my irritation up another degree.

“Don’t say another word. You know what? That’ll be it then.
