To clarify this concept an analogy from the sporting world might be helpful. The oldest trophy in North American professional sport is the Stanley Cup. Only one Stanley Cup exists; it is stored in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Every year, each member of the winning team receives a replica of the trophy to display at home. Although the replica is not the real object, players display it proudly as a symbol of the reality located elsewhere. Similarly, the replica tabernacle and its rituals pointed to YHWH’s heavenly temple and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to which the triune God had committed himself before the foundation of the world. Whether or not Moses saw the sacrificed Son of God in the heavenly sanctuary, this sacrifice alone provides the grounds for our forgiveness and the forgiveness of the Israelites.
To explain how this worked, we might use another analogy from the world of electrical engineering. When we flick a light switch, neither we nor the switch creates light. Light is produced by energy constantly flowing through the circuits. In the sacrificial system, God graciously provided the Israelites with a “light switch”: the ritual actions in the tabernacle triggered the application of divine power—the power to forgive made possible by the sacrifice of Christ.
The author of Hebrews was right: the blood of bulls and goats could not remove the Israelites’ sins (Heb. 10:4). However, when faithful and godly Israelites trusted in the promise of God and presented their sacrifices as instructed by him, their sins were atoned for by Christ’s sacrificial death. It is doubtful that many, if any, in ancient Israel understood the relationship between their replica actions and the real sacrifice of Christ. However, the efficacy of the rituals did not depend upon full and perfect knowledge; it depended on YHWH’s word. Having presented their offerings in faith, faithful Israelites could rejoice in his forgiving grace.
