CARA / EDMOND

“What are you doing here?” Edmond said, more an accusation than a question.

Pickett dismissed Edmond’s tone and sidled up to him. “Ain’t you going to introduce me, Ed?” he said with a slow, gravelly Southern accent.

Cara instinctively took a step back. “I’ll ask again. What are you doing here?” Edmond said.

“We was just out for a nice walk along the pier, looking to have some fun. On the hunt, you might say. Wasn’t we?” Pickett said. His companions snickered and nodded in agreement. “And who should we see but our ol’ boss, Ed, with these two beautiful specimens,” Pickett said. He turned to Cara. “The name’s Nathanial Pickett,” he said, holding out his hand.

“Cara,” Cara said, giving him her hand. “I feel like I’ve seen you before. Have we met?”

Edmond shot her a concerned look. How did she know Pickett?

“Not officially, but I’ve kept an eye on you. You’re quite the artist and,” Pickett paused, glancing at Fiona. “Daughter, granddaughter?”

Cara nodded slightly. Edmond narrowed his eyes. Pickett was clearly not interested in Cara’s art.

“Ah, lovely to see the whole family together.” Pickett took Cara’s hand and pressed it to his lips, scratching her skin on his rough beard.

“Pleasure,” Pickett said. “Ma’am,” he said to Fiona and reached his hand to her. Fiona gripped her wheelchair tightly and shook her head. Pickett shrugged dismissively. “So, care for a friendly game?” he sneered, offering Edmond a gun. Edmond gritted his teeth and snatched the rifle from Pickett, glaring with contempt. Pickett’s companions circled them, forcing away two young people who had been about to join the game. The couple scuttled off, their eyes wide with intimidation.

“Maybe we should go,” Cara said to Edmond. She put her hand on his back.

“No,” Edmond said softly. He couldn’t show weakness in front of Pickett and the others. Cara stepped back and stood close to Fiona.

“Ha, that’s my man,” Pickett exclaimed. “Care to make this interesting? A little wager?”

Edmond held the rifle up, sighted a target, and then looked Pickett in the eye.

“If I win, you give us what you promised,” Pickett said. He glanced at Fiona. “And since we’ve been so patient, a little extra recompense,” he said with a slight nod toward Cara.

“Edmond?” Cara said. Her voice betrayed a sense of worry.

“It’s fine,” Edmond said. He turned back to Pickett. “And when I win, you take your hunt elsewhere, away from this pier.” He shoved a rifle into Pickett’s hands.

“M’lord,” Pickett sneered and gave a mocking bow, indicating Edmond should shoot first.

Edmond took aim. He followed one of the small round targets down its track on the far wall. He shot and missed.

Pickett lifted his rifle and fired. The target went down with a loud metal clink. “I’m sorry, boss, were you going for that one?” he asked mockingly.

Edmond didn’t respond. He held up his rifle and took a deep breath. He exhaled and squeezed the trigger. Clink. A target went down.

Pickett growled and took aim. He tracked a target and fired. Another one down.
