I only slept a few hours—or that’s what it felt like—curled against Ace, who was still next to me, when the bed dipped. My eyes were heavy but I forced them open. Tanner stared at me, but it wasn’t the Tanner I knew. His monster regarded me from his quiet gaze, but it wasn’t anger I saw there or the need to feed. No, he was worried.

I sat up and stroked the side of his face, blinking hard to try to focus my eyes. “You okay?”

He scooted closer to me. I could sense Caesar pacing around in the hallway like I was out there with him. Griffin slammed a book down across the house. Rowan wasn’t inside. He’d gone somewhere. It was harder to get a read on him. Ace was out cold, as if daylight had pulled him under. But much as I’d passed out hard, I was surprisingly awake now.

I got onto my knees. “You don’t like that you slept through the battle?”

He couldn’t talk to me, but I could understand Tanner just fine. We always managed to speak the same language without using words. Even when she’d been human, and I hadn’t been there yet, we understood him.

I explained. “It isn’t your fault. Some vampires can’t rise during the day ever. You’re still newly made. I don’t know why I can, but I’m sure someday you will. They knew that. That’s why they came when they did. It’s a good thing Ace and I are weird. You’ll get there. That’s all. We fought to keep all of you safe.”

I might as well have struck him. Tanner’s expression said he didn’t like it at all. I frowned. “It’s not your job to keep me safe. It’s our job to keep each other safe. You’ll take care of me, and I’ll take care of you. I’m not going to argue about that, either.” I grinned at him, and he rolled his eyes at me. “I’m pretty kick ass, Tanner. I kept up with Ace. They didn’t get to me, not once.”

He tilted his neck. Okay. He had something to say, and I couldn’t blame him for that. Much as I could understand him, it still had to be frustrating for him. I bit his neck and shuddered with pleasure as the warm essence of Tanner filled me. I usually only took a little bit from him because he needed his voice but suddenly I was starving, and not for just any blood. I really needed his.

I crawled onto his lap and drank until I was full. After closing his wound, I lifted my head. Had I taken too much? No, his eyes were clear. He was still fine.

“Don’t get cocky, Maci. They sent vampires that died. Next time, they’ll send better ones.”

I licked my lips because I liked how he watched me do it. “Maybe we’ll take the fight to them?”

Tanner smoothed my hair off my forehead. “Not until we’ve all memory traveled. Only me and Rowan left, right? I think it’s important or you couldn’t do it.
