Chapter 15

My lips were numb. My fingers wouldn’t move.

Ryn had just lost.

He hadn’t even fucking tried.

I turned to him robotically. Ryn was slouched against one of the pillars, studying his nails. Sensing my gaze, his fist clenched, and he turned to me.

“Do you want to check out the manor? I've heard it’s haunted.” His expression was earnest. Disarming.

I tilted my head to the side as I studied him. “Sure.”

He held out the crook of his elbow, and I looped my arm through it. Stepping away from the bustle of the auction, Ryn led us through the gilded royal halls of Hampton Court Palace.

Each painting and display case that lined the hallway had a small sign detailing the piece. Even though it had once been the home to Henry the eighth, Hampton Court was very much a museum.

Our footsteps echoed across the tiled floor, and Ryn paused by a window.

“You can see the hedge maze from here.” He noted casually. Both of his hands remained in his tailored trouser pockets.

I followed his line of sight. My entire body was on edge.

Being chased across the North Circular with Leviathan on our bumper had made me feel something akin to alive for the first time I could remember.

I was tired of being separate from the world around me.

Just. So. Damned. Tired.

All of the time.

“I got what I needed.” Ryn's lip twitched. “If you don’t want to look around. Let's go home.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Don't you care that some lady just won a piece of the VenąZa?” I asked.

“You win some. You lose some.” He shrugged.

I felt like the vein on my forehead was going to burst.

“You are so bloody frustrating.” I enunciated each word.

Ryn broke out into a full smirk. “I should hope so. I'm trying to be.” He offered me the crook of his elbow, ever the gentleman, and Hampton Court melted away.
