48 Have you enjoyed playing any sports?

Both positive and negative answers can be instructive. Some people have not enjoyed sport because of lack of opportunity, lack of confidence in their abilities or body shape, or even simple social shyness. Others simply don’t like sport, preferring more intellectual pursuits.

If the interviewee has enjoyed sports, it’s likely that they have taken part in a few different ones over the years. Did they join clubs and were they team members? Did they get or even give coaching? Did they play with their children and husband or wife? How important has sport been in the interviewee’s life and have they had to deal with sports injuries along the way?

Also ask if they now enjoy or have enjoyed indoor games such as chess, bridge or other card games. Find out how much of their time was and is now spent on all sports and games they participate in.
