Chapter Nine

“Fuck. I’m not girly enough for this kind of shopping. Can you just make up your mind?” I asked. An hour into looking at flowers and the idea of cake tasting kept sounding better and better.

“The white calla lilies. That’s what I want. Simple and eloquent. Let’s go with those,” she said, her face bunched up with indecision.

“Are you sure?”

“They’re gorgeous, don’t you think?”

“Yes, I think they’re perfect. I shouldn’t have questioned. Let’s order and get over to the bakery. I need some damn cake now.”

“Fine, fine. Let me order and we can go.” She walked over to the counter and started talking to the owner.

I pulled my phone out of my purse and saw a missed call from Sterling. Then I dialed his number and stepped toward the door for better service.

“Hey baby,” he answered.

“Hey, sexy. Whatcha doing?”

“Leaving the tux shop finally. I’ll never understand how you women love to shop. That was hell. Where are you two at?”

“Finishing up at the flower shop, about to head over to the bakery. It’s cake-eating time, dammit. I bet you look sexy as hell in a tux though.”

“Guess you’ll find out soon enough.”

“You know, I bet it looks great on you, but I know it would look even better on the floor.”

“Damn, woman. Are you trying to give me a boner over the phone? Seth isn’t exactly who I want around when I’m hard, baby.”

“I’m sure he’d take care of that for you though. You two are best buds nowadays.”

“Don’t play, Carissa. You’re putting my manhood on the line,” he said sternly.

“I’ll make up for it later. Bet your ass on that.”

“You girls go eat your cake. We have some things to do, and we’ll meet you back at the hotel later. Okay?”

“Don’t let Seth take care of you too much. I’m going to need you ready for me tonight,” I teased.

“Fuck off. I love you, babe.”

“You too.”

“Good enough for me.” And with that, he hung up.

I’d be able to say that back one day. I hoped.

“Was that Sterling?” Ava asked as she stuffed her receipt in her purse.

“Yep. The boys are busy jacking each other off. We clearly need a closer relationship to keep up with their bromance.”

“You’re gross. Don’t include my man in your dirty little fantasies.”

“They aren’t fantasies! Sterling said he was getting a boner. It’s only right to assume that Seth would take care of it for him.”

“What did you say to cause such a gross conversation?”

“What did I say? How dare you assume his boner had anything to do with me. He’s with Seth right now.”

“What did you say?”

“I may have said something about his tux looking better on the floor. But that’s beside the point. You ready?”

“Let’s go, you dirty tramp.”

“Hey, I’m a clean tramp. Get it right.”

Since the bakery was close to the flower shop, we walked over just in time for our appointment with Martha’s grandkids.

“You two must be Ava and Carissa,” a young girl said us as we walked in. “I’m Kayla, and this is my brother, Derek.
