good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish" (Jn 10:11, 28). a I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me" (Jn 14:6). "I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit" (Jn 15:5). a I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me shall live" (Jn 11:25-26).

Jesus Christ did not come to show us the way, he is the way. He did not just teach us some truth, he is the truth. He did not just leave us a manual to live by; he is our life. 2

Notice that all these passages start with the words, "I am." These are only a few of the places where Jesus tells us who he is and what he is like—where he reveals his true identity to us.

The Bible also has a great deal to say about our true identity. I'd like to close this chapter with another set of "I am" statements, this time referring to ourselves as we now exist in God's eyes. The next time you're tempted to slip into thinking of yourself according to a false identity, you might look over this list, look up some of these Scripture passages, and remind yourself of who you really are.
