CHAPTER 18
Lara chose a small table in a back corner of the sparsely populated Ramada Inn bar, then told the waitress she was waiting for friends. She ordered a glass of ice water. She needed to think.
What the hell was David doing at Toddâs parties? Who had invited him? None of the answers she came up with made sense. She played with the notion that David knew the bartender, Alex something or other, who invited him to the party. That had to be the reason. No other logical answer would suffice until she heard differently. Would David tell her the truth? Could it be that he knew Todd? If so, why hadnât he told her?
She knew very little about David. Of course, theyâd only been together for a few months, but still who was he? All she knew was that he was employed by Shell Oil as project manager for an off-shore drilling site, and that he had graduated from Rice University with an engineering degree. That was it. He had never mentioned his family, where he grew up, or if he had siblings.
All I know is heâs good in bed. Dammit! Another shallow relationship.
Lara took a deep sip of cold water. She had decided for now, not to tell Edie about David. David was her problem, not a police matter. He may be possessive, and have a trigger temper, but he wasnât a killer. But what if David had found out about the affair, and confronted Todd? That would make him a suspect.
Stop thinking like that. Donât say a thing!
Edie and Ron appeared suddenly. Lara jumped. âShit, you scared me,â she said, trying to laugh off her self-absorbed stupor.
âNice greeting,â Edie said pulling a chair out from the small table. âYou didnât see us coming?â
âNo. I guess I was deep in my own thoughts. Please sit down,â Lara said. âDetective Yates, what a pleasant surprise.â
Lara quickly glanced at Ron. What a hunk, she mused before blurting out, âI could use a stiff drink.â
She motioned the waitress over and ordered a dry Martini. Edie and Ron ordered club sodas.
âYou sounded a little upset when you called,â Edie said. âWhatâs going on?â
âA little upset? I was about to explode,â Lara said. âNot only that, but on my way over here I saw the same dark sedan I saw the other night. The car followed me for about ten minutes. This time I got a glimpse of a woman driver, but I didnât recognize her. It could have been a man with long hair. Iâm so confused. Whoâs following me?â
âBe careful, and call one of us immediately if you see the car again, or feel threatened,â Edie said. âPlease, whatever you do, donât stop and confront whoever it is.â
The waitress returned with their order. She gave Ron his club soda, and said, âHavenât I seen your picture in the newspaper? Do you play for the Astros?â
Ron smiled broadly. âIf only I did, but I donât.â
Not to be deterred the waitress studied Ronâs lean face.
