Despite their short-lived tiff over their arrangement and insistence they were only together for sex, Roman had spent every night since in Sophie’s bed. Minus the luggage which had made him question their status in the first place.

He knew they were veering into dangerous territory, and it disturbed him more than his usual adrenaline-fuelled exploits. It was making him question his true feelings as much as Sophie’s. He was becoming too used to climbing into her bed at the end of a shift and waking up beside her in the morning. There was nothing like winding down from a stress-filled day and coming home to make love to her. When he was with Sophie he didn’t need to be searching for the next daredevil stunt. He was content in her company, and he was sure she felt the same. Except when they were having sex, when ‘content’ turned to ‘mind-blowing’.

The revelations about Sophie’s teenage mindset had weighed on his mind since the night they had gone ice-skating. If he was guilty of taking too many risks, she had taken the opposite path, afraid of taking any. He hadn’t realised the lasting impact the loss of her parents had had on her, or how much it would shape her life. If he had, he might have handled their separation with more care. His intention had never been for her to feel abandoned or unwanted, he had experienced enough of that himself to ever inflict it on anyone else. Now that he knew the truth, he had a duty to rectify his mistakes and undo the belief Sophie had harboured for so long which prevented her from living her life to the fullest.

They had grown closer since that night when they had opened up about their families and the issues which had crept into their relationship. While he was enjoying it, it was important for them both to remember this thing between them was not for ever. He hadn’t changed from who he was, and Sophie would be disappointed if she believed otherwise. This time, when they parted ways, he wanted to make sure it was a mutual, pain-free exercise. He hoped that if he was able to help her move further out of her comfort zone she would realise she didn’t need him or anyone else to validate her.

Although she’d been resistant even to the idea of ice-skating, it had not taken much to coax her into participating and eventually enjoying it. He intended to get her more involved in the sort of activities he did outside of work, to get her blood pumping and remind her she was alive. That she had not died along with her parents or her grandmother.

Today he was making another surprise Santa visit at the local village fair and Sophie was waiting for him on the ground below with the rest of the crowd. Abseiling down from a helicopter was part of his job and not something which made him nervous at all.
