The ‘dematerialisation’ of consumption by eco-efficient services

Within the context of the discussions about sustainable models of prosperity, the collective use of objects of everyday life, such as the private borrowing of videos and books, the commercial renting of home and garden or the co-operative sharing of cars or washing machines, etc., is looked upon to be energy- and resource-efficient and thus environmentally sound. In principle, there are three forms of use-oriented service concepts (Empacher et al. 1994; Hockerts etal 1994; Bierter 1997):

1.

Product-oriented eco-efficient services.

2.

Use-oriented eco-efficient services.

3.

Result-oriented eco-efficient services.
