Chapter 16

“You’re alive,” I cried as I stumbled over the table and fell into his arms.

“I suppose I am. Didn’t think I was for a minute there.” He clung to me fully, and it felt different than the moments before I’d defeated the demon. He’d been lighter then, almost like sea mist on my skin.

“You were with me.” I said it as a statement, not a question.

“I was.”

“You held onto me, and then…”

“Then I was pulled away, yes.”

A tear sprang to my eye, and he wiped it with his thumb as it fell. “I thought I was leaving you forever. I didn’t understand the call, or that it was bringing me back to you. So I fought. I’m sorry if I hurt you.”

Raina approached slowly, her footsteps echoing in the now-silent room.

“That’s twice she’s called you back. Perhaps you’d better stick by her side, Asher,” Raina said.

“I think I will,” he said as he tried to stand on wobbly legs. He grunted, still in obvious pain as he worked to straighten himself fully. I stood with him, lending my strength.

“Raina, can you help him?”

“You are the epitome of giving a mouse a cookie,” she said as she put herself between us. Reluctantly, I moved back, letting go of his hand.

Raina opened her bag, which had never left her shoulder, and mixed a few things together. “Here, drink this.”

“What, no chants?” he said, hiding his laugh behind the cup she’d given him.

“No, I save the chanting for your better half.”

“Well, you’ve got one thing right—she is my better.” He raised his cup to me. “Cheers.” He drank it down.

There was a time when he would’ve questioned her, demanded to know what was in it and if it would kill him. It was a relief to know that after the number of times she’d saved him over the last few days, he’d finally let go of that distrust.

When all the light had gone from the cup, he set it on the table with a clunk. “Better?” I asked.

“Much. Now, what do you say we go see about a cat with a bad temper?” He took my hand, and I searched for Raina in the darkness.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet, seer. We’ve got a long way to go. And I’m afraid our worst enemies are still to come.”

When we walked out of the Upper Room, I half expected Clover to be there, waiting to guide us to the next place, but it turned out we didn’t need her.

A huge dome of silver light extended over at least a block. Someone was protecting us and a lot of others.

“Don’t trust it,” Raina said.

“But…” I marveled at the huge dome, bigger than anything she’d ever produced, despite how powerful she was.

“Witches are selfish creatures. Whoever did this did it to protect themselves. If they caught a few people inside, so be it,” she said as she walked along, dragging me by the hand.

“What is it protecting us from?” I asked.

No one answered me for a few turns, and then Raina stopped abruptly.
