Chapter Twenty-two
Jack
I swung the ax down, imagining Alpha Barrettâs face as I split the log beneath me.
I hadnât seen the man for myself, but Iâd been able to fabricate a sufficiently pretentious image of him in my head. All morning, his smug grin adorned my logs.
âJack,â my brother called across the field. âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âWhatâs it look like?â I grunted back, driving the ax down again.
âIâll have one of the other wolves do that,â he said, his voice nearing. âSeriously, Jack. There are other things you canââ
The sound of splitting wood cut him off. âIâve got it.â
âBut Jackââ
I spun. âI said Iâve got it.â
Enzo lifted his hands in a gesture of peace. âAlright.â He repeated cautiously. âYouâve got it.â
Dropping the ax to the ground by my boots, I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. âIâm sorry.â
My brother came to rest a hand on my shoulder. âYou ready to talk about it yet?â
I glanced at him. âNo.â
Itâd been three days since my last encounter with Dallas. I hadnât slept. Iâd barely eaten.
And I was increasingly pissy with each passing hour.
âWhen youâre ready,â he said gently, slowly backing off.
I had to fight the urge to call him back and spill my guts. It wasnât that I didnât want him to knowâtruthfully, I wanted to tell him everythingâbut I couldnât bring myself to do it.
Iâd let him down. Iâd let my mother down.
Iâd let my father down.
I watched Enzo trot down the gravel driveway. The worst part was that he wouldnât be disappointed in me. Heâd understand completely. He believed in fate, true love, overcoming the odds. He was optimistic and romantic. Heâd love to hear all the details of Dallasâs return, our exchange in the alley, and the next day by the spring.
I hated myself for it.
I should have killed her right there. For years, I thought of my revenge. For years, I imagined the look on her face when I finally gave her what she deserved.
But when I was finally faced with itâwith herâI couldnât do it.
Even worseâin the last three days, all I could think of was that Alpha douchebag. For every way Iâd imagined killing Dallas, I imagined ten more ways to end Barrett. Just the thought of him piqued my wolfâs rage, urging me to shift.
All the while, Dallasâs words echoed between my ears.
âI would have been there for you. If I had known.â
I had to run.
Stepping out of my boots, I dropped my jeans and lurched onto all fours.
