Chapter Six

The next day came and it brought a call from Lucien, the Vampire Lord.

Not that she wasn’t expecting his call—she just hadn’t expected it so early in the morning. She’d just got herself a cup of coffee, grabbed the morning paper and had sat down to enjoy both.

“Lucien, I’m so happy you returned my call,” she told him.

She was glad he’d called. Not many people were excited to talk to Lucien. He was considered ruthless. She knew this to be true. But she also knew he was level-headed and fair. They’d become friends of a sort after he’d been poisoned by one of his lovers. She’d been called in to treat him. Not by him, by one of his people when he’d passed out.

She didn’t need to ask what happened to his lover. His lover would never poison anyone else again. This was his ruthless part. She also didn’t need to ask what would happen to the person who had called her in to treat him when he was so vulnerable. She’d been there for that punishment. Only it wasn’t so much punishment as it was penance. The young man, his valet, had been made to inform families of a loved one’s passing, human and vampire alike. This was the part of Lucien she’d seen as fair.

Death had a way of hammering home human frailty and vampire vulnerability. There were deaths every night in the blood dens run by the vampires. So his valet had made several visits to homes where he left the occupants grieving.

“I needed to look into some of the matters that you discussed in your message, Evangeline. I have found some answers,” Lucien responded. “I had not been informed that the Guardian had been attacked in one of my clubs. I rectified that error.”

“Oh, that’s good. Can I speak with whomever you talked with?” Evie got excited. Maybe they would be able to tell her exactly what was done to Ellie and the others to make them contract magic sickness.

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible. That person is no longer able to discuss any matter,” Lucien said smoothly. “However, I do have some information for you. I would prefer to discuss this face to face.”

“Can you meet me at my home, Lucien? I‘ll have Ellie here as well. Maybe we can brainstorm and come up with a plan of action after we all learn all the facts.”

“It would be my pleasure. This way, I can apologise to the Guardian in person as well for the assault on her person.”

“Oh great. I’ll see you this evening,” Evie told him before she hung up.

Trent was giving her an odd look. “You invited the Vampire Lord to come to your home, Evie.”

“Yes, I know,” she responded. Seeing his look of disbelief she continued, “Lucien is a friend. I helped him a while back. Now we’re friendly. Besides the wards won’t let him through if he had bad intentions.”

Drew just shook his head but otherwise kept out of the conversation.
