CHAPTER 14

Despite a relatively sleepless night, Casey was up early and showered so she could get to the hospital as soon as visiting hours began. She was making poached eggs to go with her toast when her phone rang, bringing up her mom’s name. “Hello?” She held her breath as she answered the phone, afraid it was going to be terrible news.

“Casey, would you mind stopping by the church and getting your father’s personal Bible? He left it there as he often does, and I’m sure he’ll want it when he wakes up for the day.”

“How is he?”

“He looks a little better this morning.” Her mother sounded terrible, her voice hoarse and full of exhaustion.

Casey decided that when she got to the hospital, she would do her best to make sure her mother went home for a shower and a nap, reminding her mother she had to take care of herself so she could take care of John when he was discharged.

After finishing her breakfast as quickly as possible, Casey got in her car and drove over to the church. She was surprised to see Ben’s Jeep in the parking lot, sitting beside a white sedan. She frowned, wondering if he was at the church, and if so, why?

Remembering her reason for coming, she slid out of the car and entered the church. She went straight to her father’s office, easily locating the white leather-bound Bible that he’d left on the desk. She picked it up and put it in her bag, planning to find Ben and thank him again for his presence the night before. She heard voices coming from his small office as she started in that direction.

Casey had every intention of announcing her presence and not listening at doorways, but when she heard Joanna’s low tone, she hesitated outside the office. Instinct urged her to keep quiet and listen.

“Thank you for doing tomorrow’s sermon, Ben, because Ted’s not up for it.”

“That’s what I’m here for, to pitch in and help out as needed.”

“That’s not the only reason you’re here, and you know it. It looks like things will change quickly now, so how are you feeling about that? Are you confident you can step into Pastor John’s role? It’s rather like being thrown in the deep end without swimming lessons.”

“I’m sure I can handle it, and I’m happy to help,” Ben sounded resolved.

“I understand that, but I mean in a permanent situation. I think we’re going to have to accelerate the timeline based on Pastor John’s health. You knew this was the end goal when you took the job, so are you ready to step into the role of pastor of Sweet Mountain Assembly?”

Casey didn’t have a chance to hear his response. She drew a deep breath as she stormed into the room. She glared at Ben. “I knew it. I knew you were here to steal my dad’s position.” She was thrusting her finger violently in the air in his direction. “I couldn’t trust you. I told myself I was imagining things, but I wasn’t.
