He had her strapped to the bed, and Elise told herself to breathe and not panic. This was about trust and pleasure with possibly a dose of pain but nothing like she had endured in that house with the Changelings. And this was different. Xavier was sane.

“You sure you’re okay with this?”

Elise nodded. Right after Xavier had told her to take her clothes off, he’d received a phone call that had him changing their plans. Within minutes, one of his men delivered X’s tux along with a small package while she had texted Drake. The pick-up point would be her place and not X’s.

She glanced to the right then the left. Her wrists were expertly tied to the bedposts with scarves. “Why do I get the feeling you do this often?”

“Jealous?”

“Curious,” she said, though the thought of him doing these things with other women rankled her.

He sat on the edge of the bed and brought the package within viewing distance. One more scarf, crimson in color.

He grasped the silk between his thumb and index finger and made a show of pulling it out of the box. “This one is for over your eyes.”

Elise tempered the tingle of fear running up and down her spine. Before Brian, she let no one touch her except Drake, the nightmares of her past still fresh in her mind. Drake had understood her apprehension and so had Brian.

Brian hadn’t asked questions and was patient and kind as he helped her overcome her anxiety. They’d taken things slow. Slow was six months of kissing and light petting. Elise was surprised Brian stuck around for so long.

Eyeing the silk, she swallowed, and gave Xavier a slow nod. His gaze darted to her wrists then her face before he glanced at the scarf in his hand. “You’re not ready, are you?”

Elise bit the corner of her lips and ignored the pressure in her chest. “I—” She closed her eyes and took deep breaths. “I want to, believe me I do. But there are things about me—”

She kept her eyes closed and didn’t open them even when she felt the scarves fall from her wrists. She continued to squeeze her eyes shut as X covered her nakedness with her bedcovers.

Next to her, the bed moved. Elise realized he had gotten up off the bed. The mood dropped to a dead notch, and it was her fault. She opened her eyes and grabbing the covers, she hugged them to her chest. He had stopped at the door with his back to her.

He hadn’t even undressed while she had let him strip her until she was vulnerable to his eyes, hands, and mind. Blood roared in her ears.

“I’ll understand if you want to seek out another woman.” Elise pushed the covers off. “I never asked to be exclusive.”

The shirt he wore stretched across the muscular planes of his shoulders like a second skin while his black hair curled at his nape. Elise wanted to reach out and stroke the cords of tendons alongside his neck.
